Zdeněk Burian Trachodon and Tyrannosaurus

This well-known painting is from Prehistoric Animals by Dr. Josef Augusta (Spring Books, no date - early 1960s at the latest). It reappeared later, with rex reworked (see detail below) - slightly larger head, slightly higher back, less-flexible tail. It still doesn't fit the current idiom and has been criticized for that - though not by me.

The date is the same on both versions of the painting (a "38" over at lower right, just below Burian's signature). I don't know where or when this rework was originally published, or even if it was reworked by Burian himself. This detail is from Life Before Man by Zdeněk V. Špinar, published in Prague by Artia (1972), and in London by Thames and Hudson (1972). The book was revised in 1995. Nearly all of the illustrations are by Burian, although the original apearances of the paintings are uncredited.
